Powering Our Future: The Solar Carport

Our landmark project is a new solar carport, a state-of-the-art installation featuring 104 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. This powerful system will generate over 62,000 kWh of clean, renewable energy annually, making a significant impact on our club's carbon footprint. The energy produced is designed to power the electrical needs of the clubhouse, making our operations effectively carbon neutral. This is a huge step forward, equivalent to eliminating over 9,000 kg of CO2 emissions each year.

The new structure isn't just about clean energy. It also offers a modern convenience for our members with the addition of three electric vehicle (EV) charging points, helping to support the transition to greener transportation.

What's more, our commitment to sustainability extends to the construction itself. Instead of using traditional concrete foundations, the carport will be secured using ground screw anchors. This innovative method greatly reduces the environmental impact of the project by avoiding the high emissions associated with cement production.

Discover how we’re protecting our stunning natural surroundings and leading the way in environmental stewardship.

At Lewes Golf Club, we believe that our responsibility extends far beyond the fairway. As stewards of a magnificent natural landscape within the South Downs National Park, environmental sustainability is not just a policy—it’s a core value that guides every decision we make. We are thrilled to announce a significant milestone in our journey toward a greener, more sustainable future: the installation of a state-of-the-art solar carport. This project is a monumental step forward, harnessing the power of the sun to make our clubhouse operations effectively carbon neutral, reinforcing our commitment to protecting this unique and beautiful environment for generations to come.

Beyond Solar: Our Ongoing Commitment to Nature

The solar carport is just one piece of a much larger, long-term commitment to environmental stewardship at Lewes Golf Club. Our beautiful course is part of the protected South Downs National Park, and we work in constant dialogue with organisations like the Sussex Wildlife Trust and Weald to Waves to ensure our operations are in harmony with the surrounding nature.

Our dedication to the environment is demonstrated through a range of ongoing initiatives:

  • Promoting Biodiversity & Wildlife: We actively create and manage habitats to help local wildlife thrive. This includes installing bird boxes for native species such as Starlings, Swifts, and Barn Owls, and maintaining beehives at the top of the course to support our vital pollinator populations. This work has led to an increase in birds of prey like kestrels and peregrine falcons on the course.

  • Sustainable Course Management: We implement practices that benefit both the course and the ecosystem. Our "cut-and-collect" program for the rough encourages the growth of meadow wildflowers by preventing nutrient enrichment of the soil. We also rely on a borehole for our water supply and ensure all green waste is composted on-site.

  • Chemical-Free Care: In our conscious effort to protect the environment, we do not use fungicides or pesticides on our course. We embrace natural solutions, even allowing wildlife to forage and play their part in the ecosystem, proving that a top-quality golf course can coexist with a flourishing natural habitat.
